Benguela's double album Sui/Chop Sui is 20 years old. Recorded as a live improvisation in front of 30 guests at Sui Studios in Cape Town, the tracks were then sent to artists such as Felix Laband and Burnt Friedman to remix. It was released on Open Record in 2003 to critical acclaim. Now beautifully remastered by Dirk Hugo, both Sui and Chop Sui are finally available on streaming services for the first time. Chop Sui includes four bonus remixes we couldn't fit on the CD :)

Benguela Crowd Fund New Album

Benguela is plundering the remote coffers of virtual music lovers everywhere to finalise the recordings of their 5th album!

Yup it's come down to this folks - love in advance.

All we can say is that the recordings are really lovely in our humble opinion and we'd really dig your support.

We're wanting to raise R9 000 to cover the costs of the recording, plus the editing and mixing which still need to happen. A further R11000 would cover the cost of designing and printing 1000 CDs.

The way it works is that you purchase one of the options available on our page on

Benguela release Bush Radio Live album on Bandcamp!!

On the 6th of October 2003 Benguela were invited to play live on Brendon Bussy's "Made up Sounds from the Then and There". This was very briefly a live monthly feature on Martin Sims' show 'ardkore which aired on Cape Town's community station Bush Radio. The show got unceremoniously canned in early 2004. Martin made the recording, using three Sennheiser MD 441-U's through a Soundcraft SAC100 broadcast mixer direct to Minidisc and it now available for download for the very first time. You can also now download all of Benguela's albums on Bandcamp and pay whatever you feel is right.

Martin emailed after the show: "A stripped down Benguela improvised half an hour of the most hypnotic jazzy post rock. It was bass drum, snare, cymbal, guitar, stick bass and a whole colony of effect pedals operated by telepathic musicians. It was spectacular."
