Benguela release Bush Radio Live album on Bandcamp!!

On the 6th of October 2003 Benguela were invited to play live on Brendon Bussy's "Made up Sounds from the Then and There". This was very briefly a live monthly feature on Martin Sims' show 'ardkore which aired on Cape Town's community station Bush Radio. The show got unceremoniously canned in early 2004. Martin made the recording, using three Sennheiser MD 441-U's through a Soundcraft SAC100 broadcast mixer direct to Minidisc and it now available for download for the very first time. You can also now download all of Benguela's albums on Bandcamp and pay whatever you feel is right.

Martin emailed after the show: "A stripped down Benguela improvised half an hour of the most hypnotic jazzy post rock. It was bass drum, snare, cymbal, guitar, stick bass and a whole colony of effect pedals operated by telepathic musicians. It was spectacular."

"classy 2003 delighting-in-life quiet improv steady-rhythm-ride band brilliance by Benguela !!! - quote = "hypnotic jazzy post-rock" !!! - don't be alarmed - minimal & unwacky too - ie excellent !" - pyongyangplastics

Benguela & Chris Letcher at Mahogany Room

The Letcher and Benguela have had a long association and we're very excited to be playing these two gigs finally. The Mahogany Room is a fantastic little venue run by 2 serious jazz musicians. The venue splits the eve into two sets and we're not sure how we'll divide the playing yet, probably an artist per set with some collaboration somewhere in the middle? Anyway it's best you stay for both.
Fri 7th and Sat 8th September
1st set 8pm R60
2nd set 10pm R60
Both sets R100
Reservations: 0766792697 - call after 3pm or leave a message, someone will call you back.

Hello, news and review

Hello. So 2011 was a bit of a non event for Benguela. But on the personal front we have collected some new skills which should benefit the band nicely. We're going to be working with Andrew Garton again at the end of this month, recording some of the tracks we performed last time he was out from Oz - Andrew is a strange kettle of fish, part theater, part activist - check him out on
Then there's the launch of the new Red Earth & Rust album happening in March which we've been involved with as individuals more than as Benguela. Produced by Jonny Blundell and engineered by Dave Langeman, this album is sounding incredible! Nothing about the new album is up yet, but you can find out about the band at
And lastly there's a great review on Black Southeaster on the Muse site that we missed HERE
